…And he cheated on her (part 2)

John sat in his normal spot at the back of the car being driven by Akpan. He could see that Akpan kept looking through the rear mirror at him and that was expected; how can someone be sweating in an ‘oye-tight’ car? Yet there he was, sweating profusely.

The day before, he had one of those meetings scheduled at night; those ones where it’s too late to go back home and his company will lodge him in an hotel for the night. He had called Ada to tell her about the impromptu meeting. And that’s when it happened:

John, how come this meeting of yours just happened to magically appear? … You are going around with one of your ‘secretaries’ abi…God will judge…

He dropped the phone from his ears; He was used to it by now. She just nags on and on and when she’s done, she’d drop the phone.

John! John!! I know you are there and-

Look Ada, I’m tired of your nagging! Yes, I’m going around with her. Her name is Bimpe if you must know. Anyways, I’m not coming home and that’s that!

He hung up. There was no Bimpe. In fact, he had never cheated on her but if that’s what she wanted to hear, well he gave it to her. Plus, he had had it with her. After 5 years of marriage without a child, she had become a nag and blamed him for everything. Still in thought, he heard his phone ring:

Hey John, hope you are alright? The client just called and cancelled so we won’t be having that meeting anymore.

Oh no, he was really looking forward to that meeting. His house had become a war zone and he was not ready to take fire this night. He packed up and left the office.

Oga, na house we dey go?

No. Take me to that bar on Awolowo road.

Alcohol would drown all his anger and sorrow.

After that, it was a blur. Apparently he had told Akpan to take him to Linda’s house. Linda had always come on to him when his wife wasn’t looking. He was tired of fighting for a marriage that wasn’t worth it.

So the alcohol explains the headache. The alcohol also explains the XOXO note and how he woke up in another woman’s bed. He headed to the house battle front. He didn’t need grief this Saturday morning and he just decided to get home and head straight to bed.

Thank you Akpan. You can take the day off. I’m not going out this weekend“, he said as he headed for the front door.

He’s back” Ada said to someone who was obscured in the kitchen. They had always known how to keep their fights private.

Oh, welcome back John. How was your meeting?” Linda said, stepping out from the kitchen with a cup of tea.

She made her way to sit beside his wife as they continued watching their E! channel.
